My mistake, in the UK a "hood" can mean a covering (as in a "fire hood" for a light fitted in a ceiling). I should have remembered that in the States a "hood" is what we call a "bonnet" and means something else. By "fire suppression" I mean to either put out a fire or stop it from propagating. The primary purpose of the hood insulation in our cars is to slow the progression a fire from the engine compartment into the passenger cell. It may put the fire out, but that is secondary.
